The Tower of Babel Part II

After Noah’s flood, God commanded man to be fruitful and multiply, and to fill the earth.  God wanted man to spread out and take dominion over the earth, as He had stated to Adam earlier in Genesis 1:

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1:28

It didn’t happen, so again God says to fill the earth in Genesis 9:

So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.”

Genesis 9:1

God did not want man to remain together in one place, but to spread out across the earth.

They didn’t do it.  In Genesis 11, we are told that they (some of Noah’s descendants) journeyed east to Shinar (current day Iraq) and dwelt there.  They decided they would make a name for themselves, and build city with a tower to the heavens.  This is the root meaning for the Hebrew word tower… to become great, to be magnified.  They purposefully did this to avoid being scattered across the earth:

And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

Genesis 11:4

God realized what was happening.  In examining the situation, He notes that they were one, of one accord, and that now nothing they propose will be withheld from them.  Basically God is saying that together as one, man is corrupt.  Look at the meaning of the Hebrew word city, it means anguish, of terror.  God knew together, as one unit, man would act in a degraded fashion in the lowest common denominator as related to morality.  Look at the cities today… the more people there are, the more corrupt the city is.

So God scattered them across the face of the earth through different languages, to put an end to the corruption that occurs when myriads of people are acting together as one.

Fast forward to today.  Through the internet, and more specifically the social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, we have coalesced back together as one.  No longer do we have geographical borders or language barriers.  In mere seconds we can communicate with anyone at any time.  And more than that, one person can communicate with vast numbers of people at once, regardless of where they are physically, or what language they speak.

The borders, boundaries and mandates that God put in place thousands of years ago at the tower of Babel have been all but removed, negating His wishes and best intentions for us.  We again have come together as one, as one group of people with our own purpose, intentions and will.  We have laid a foundation of community in social media that will build upon it a morally corrupt way of life worldwide that will surely get Gods attention again.

I’m not here to say that all people, that every single person is corrupt and falls into the outline above.  Nor am I saying that the internet or social media is itself evil.  A gun does not kill people, people kill people.  The internet is just the means to connect, man’s fallen nature does the rest.  Many good Christians use the internet and social media to promote God and salvation though Jesus.  But I do believe the majority and masses of the population on planet Earth have created a ground swell, a current that is sweeping all along as it heads to perdition.  Believers must keep their joyful hope in Jesus as the world speeds toward a righteous judgment where God fearing man will finally be taken to their true abode, and earth dwelling man will experience God’s wrath and eternal separation from Him.

Man has not changed since the beginning, and will remain corrupt until the end.
